Cyclones, tides, and the origin of a cross-equatorial dust storm on Mars

چکیده
[1] We investigate the triggering mechanism of a crossequatorial dust storm observed by Mars Global Surveyor in 1999. This storm, which had a significant impact on global mean temperatures, was seen in visible and infrared data to commence with the transport of linear dust fronts from the northern high latitudes into the southern tropics. However, other similar transport events observed in northern fall and winter did not lead to large dust storms. Based on off-line Lagrangian particle transport analysis using a high resolution Mars general circulation model, we propose a simple explanation for the diurnal, seasonal and interannual variability of this type of frontal activity, and of the resulting dust storms, that highlights the cooperative interaction between northern hemisphere fronts associated with low pressure cyclones and tidally-modified return branch of the Hadley circulation.

Equatorial jets in the dusty Martian atmosphere
Abstract. We investigate the production of equatorial jets which demonstrate strong local super-rotation in an atmospheric general circulation model of Mars. These westerly jets are driven by diurnal thermal tides and their strength is shown to be closely related to the amount of dust in the atmosphere. The super-rotating jets are strongest near to equinox and under conditions of high atmospher...

Dust phenomenon is a natural occurrence that occurs widespread in arid and semi-arid regions of the world, especially in the sub-equatorial latitudes. This phenomenon is among the greatest environmental problems in the world. The release of this destructive climatic phenomenon in a scattered manner in the atmosphere varies in size, time and concentration. Since this phenomenon is influenced...
متن کاملThermal Tides in an Assimilation of Three Years of Thermal Emissionspectromenter Data from Mars Global Surveyor
Introduction. Thermal tides are particularly prominent in the Mars atmosphere with the result that temperature and wind fields have a strong dependence on local solar time (LT). Tides include westward propagating migrating (sun-synchronous) waves driven in response to solar heating and additional nonmigrating waves resulting from zonal variations in the thermotidal forcing. Zonal modulation of ...

The prominence of thermal tides in the Martian atmosphere has long been recognized, through classical theory, models and observations, including surface pressure records from the Viking and Mars Pathfinder Landers. A unique record of observations over more than two Martian years is now available from the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft, although since the spacecraft is Sun-synchronous it is dif...
